New Joining Method

Here's a new joining method for you to try out, called Loops and Lace. It is published in the Talking Crochet newsletter. You can subscribe for free. This process involves loops that are crocheted on the edges and then interlaced, creating a uniquely decorative seam that frames each strip. This joining method looks very interesting, so if anyone tries it out, I'd sure like to see it.

Happy Hooking!

Simple Four-Patch - 12" square

Here's an easy pattern for a four-patch square. I designed it about a year ago, but just recently wrote it down and had it tested. I hope you like it.

By the way, my friend Kathy just LOVED her gift of the Romantic Wrap.   She even had to email me the next day to tell me that she wore it to work and what she wore it with. It looks absolutely stunning on her, as she has bright red hair. I chose the teal color pallette just for that reason. What a satisfying project that was!

Now on to the new pattern:

SIMPLE FOUR PATCH
Designed by Melinda Miller

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

FINISHED SIZE: 12” square

MATERIALS: 6 colors worsted weight yarn, 1 oz. Each
Crochet hook size H / 5.0 mm
Tapestry needle

STITCHES USED:
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc = double crochet
Tr = triple crochet

COMMENCE PATTERN:

Make 4 – 4” squares of different colors:

Ch 4.

Rnd. 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, *3 dc in same ch, ch 2, rep from * twice more, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 4.

Rnd. 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, *in ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), work 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, rep from * twice more, in ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3.

Rnd. 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, *in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), work 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * twice more, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off.

Sew / whipstitch the four squares together with tapestry needle as shown in photo. Now there is an 8” square. The next round begins around the 8” square.

Rnd. 1: Attach contrasting yarn with sl st to any corner, ch 3, 1 dc in corner, *1 dc in each of next 11 dc, 1 dc in corner sp of 4” square, 1 tr in join of two squares, 1 dc in corner sp of next 4” square, 1 dc in each of next 11 dc, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * twice more, 1 dc in each of next 11 dc, 1 dc in corner sp of 4” square, 1 tr in join of two squares, 1 dc in corner sp of next 4” square, I dc in each of next 11 dc, 2 dc in corner sp, ch 2, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. (29 dc on each side)

Rnd. 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 28 dc, *in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), 1 dc in next 29 dc, rep from * twice more, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off. (33 dc on each side)

Rnd. 3: Attach contrasting color with sl st to any corner, in corner work (ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), *1 dc in each of next 32 dc, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * twice more, 1 dc in each of next 32 dc, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. (37 dc on each side)

Note: Measure your square at this point. Decide whether to work the last round in dc or hdc to make 12”. Pattern is written as dc.

Rnd. 4: Ch 3, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), *work 1 dc in each of next 36 dc, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * twice more, work 1 dc in each of next 35 dc, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off. (41 dc on each side) Weave in ends with tapestry needle. Block.
